The City of Swift Current’s Yard Waste Management Program has returned for the 2023 season.

Keegan Story, Superintendent of Solid Waste and Diversion for the City explained that the program is designed for organic yard waste.

“We've got two different bins, one for leafy waste and one for wood waste,” he elaborated. “The wood waste bin is intended for tree trimmings and bush hedges, not for full tree removal.”

Residents should separate wood and branches from organic yard waste before arriving at the program and be prepared to empty any bags used for transportation.

Acceptable organics are weeds, potting soil, plant matter, flowers, leaves and grass clippings, woodchips and fibre plant containers.

Acceptable wood trimmings are branches with a diameter of 8 inches or smaller.

Unacceptable items to be disposed of at the site include lumber, pallets, painted, stained, or treated word for the woody materials bin. While plastic or biodegradable bags, pots, non-compostable materials, and animal waste.

“The yard waste collected in this program, does go out to the landfill, but it is not landfilled,” Story added. “It goes into our diversion piles and is incorporated into our composting programs in order to make compost that can in turn be used in various different manners.”

The program can be accessed from the rear lane at the City of Swift Current’s Recycling Depot on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Residents can also utilize the yard waste program at the Landfill from Monday to Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

For individuals with mobility issues, the attendant will unload your yard waste while you stay in your vehicle.

Weather permitting, the program will run until November 7.
