Alberta NDP leader Rachel Notley was in Fort Saskatchewan over the weekend.
The former premier was going door-to-door campaigning with Fort Saskatchewan-Vegreville MLA candidate Taneen Rudyk on Saturday (Apr. 15).
"Fort Saskatchewan is a critically important city in Alberta," said Notley. "It's a linchpin to the economic development that comes through the heartland."
The event began outside the Sportsplex on 89 Street, where Notley was joined by several dozen volunteers and even Edmonton-Riverview MLA Lori Sigurdson.
The NDP candidates said they want to address the needs most important to Fort Saskatchewan residents.
"What we want to be talking to them about today is our plans for ensuring they get the health care they need, when and where they want it, without ever having to worry about how much is in their bank account," stated Notley. "Our plans are to make sure that we help them with affordability issues, we know lots of families are struggling on that front."
"We also have a strong economic plan, specifically building on a lot of the work we've done in the past with respect to upgrading and ensuring that we have long-term sustainable industrial jobs in and around this area."
Throughout the day, the candidates went throughout the Pineview neighbourhood speaking with residents and leaving flyers about their campaign.
"There's a lot of us here," added Rudyk. "I think we're going to sprinkle out and reach as many places as we can. We did a couple of hundred doors last week, and with this number of volunteers, I'm sure we're going to increase that number exponentially."
This campaign comes just weeks after Rudyk, a Vegreville councillor, announced that she will be running against the United Conservative Party's Jackie Armstrong-Homeniuk for the job of MLA.
Notley served as premier of Alberta from 2015 to 2019, this was the second visit to the area by a premier last week with current UCP leader Danielle Smith visiting Gibbons on April 11.
The next provincial election is set for May 29.
