Airdrie Special Olympics finished out their bowling season with a first-place finish at a recent bowling event in Olds this past weekend.
Sandra Foreman, the Head Coach of the Special Olympics Airdrie Bowling Program was happy to see all of her bowlers be a part of the big win.
"We had nine athletes go to Olds and they bowled at various shifts throughout the day. The trophy was presented to the team that had the best pins over average amongst all the teams that were there."
Teams that participated in the bowling tournament included:
- Airdrie
- Olds
- Drumheller
- Red Deer
- Lacombe
- Wetaskiwin
One athlete named Christian won the men's high handicap single award. For one game, he had the highest pins over average. Foreman added that winning this event two years in a row is something that does not happen, but the team hopes to be able to do just that next year.
Usually, their bowling season starts just before Thanksgiving and ends right before Easter, but this tournament came up and it was a great opportunity for Airdrie's bowlers to have a few final games before moving to summer sports.
Foreman mentioned it's very gratifying to see all the hard work they put in and it ends up leading to something which is this trophy. With bowling now in the rearview mirror, up next are the summer sports, including bocce ball. Foreman is also the coach for bocce ball.
"It's an easy transition because bocce is a similar game to bowling so the bowlers can change transition from a winter sport to a summer sport."
Other sports being played this summer by Airdrie Special Olympics include softball and golf.
