Lamont County has a history of floods almost annually.

As April's showers bring May flowers, this could lead to some troubles in Lamont County.

The county has a history of flooding during the spring, with a 2018 flood being its worst in 30 years.

Jay Zaal with the county said that there are many factors that can lead to floods.

"Blockages are typically what causes localized flooding," stated Zaal. "Sometimes culverts can be blocked by debris, sediment, and other items, and public works is working hard to clear these on a priority basis."

Zaal added that with the dry weather, it seems unlikely that there will be flooding this year.

"Fortunately, there has been less snow accumulation and limited areas of flooding this year," said Zaal. "It should be alright if the weather stays like this."

Although there are no specific hot spots for floods in the county, areas can be more susceptible where culverts have sediment build-up.

"We monitor our culverts and roads but letting us know by completing a service request helps us address these," added Zaal.

Drainage techniques such as looking for blockages can greatly decrease the chance of a flood. However, there still are items that residents can keep around just in case.

"It is good practice to have emergency fuels, food, medication and other preparations related to impassable roads for emergency preparedness."

Lamont County also follows its master drainage plan to prevent floods from occurring.
