The major risk of flooding continues for the Red River between Emerson and the Floodway inlet.
The Hydrologic Forecast Centre reports that while most tributaries have already peaked or are near their peak within the province, flows and levels continue to rise in major rivers, including the Red, Assiniboine and Souris rivers.
The centre advises the effects of the recent weather system on southern Manitoba are still being reviewed and analyzed. Run-off from the latest precipitation is not expected to start until next week, as temperatures in most areas will remain around the freezing point until early- to mid-next week.
The Portage Diversion is now in operation to minimize the effects of ice jamming on the Assiniboine River east of Portage la Prairie and to control river levels in Winnipeg and areas along the Assiniboine River downstream of Portage la Prairie. Operation of the Red River Floodway is also underway to reduce water levels within Winnipeg.
From Wednesday to Thursday, the Red River rose about 24 inches at Emerson, 15 inches at Letellier, 11 inches at St. Jean and Morris, six inches at Ste. Agathe, 14 inches at St. Adolphe and 19 inches at the Floodway inlet.
The province is calling for the Red to crest between Emerson and the Floodway between April 28th and May 2nd at levels between those in 2019 and 2020.
There is currently a flood warning along the Morris River near Rosenort, along the Rat River from an area near Rosa to Ste. Agathe and along the Red River from an area near Fontaine Road to Prefontaine Road. There is a flood watch along the Little Morris River.
The province has also indicated a partial dike closure at Brunkild.
According to the province, there is a minor risk of flooding for the eastern region. And, generally, significant or full ice cover is reported on all major Manitoba lakes and there are no concerns with ice movement at this time.
Meanwhile, south of the border, the National Weather Service says the Red River at Fargo is currently at 29.62 feet, which is moderate flood stage. It is expected to crest on Sunday at 31 feet, which is major flood stage. At Grand Forks, the Red River is currently at 40.33 feet, which is moderate flood stage. It is expected to crest on Monday at 42.5 feet, which is moderate flood stage.
