Sylvia Marie Asmundson
On Thursday, April 20th, 2023, Sylvia Marie Asmundson (nee Harder), passed away peacefully at the age of 75 at the Douglas Campbell Lodge in Portage la Prairie, MB. As a child of God, she has been welcomed into glory by her husband Paul Asmundson, stillborn son, parents, William and Katherine Harder, brothers, William (Bill) and David, and sister Judith.
Sylvia was born on Feb 26,1948 on a stormy day in which a stone boat brought her mom to Highway 34 where she was then taken to Gladstone Hospital. Sylvia attended the Bear Creek School for the elementary years and then went to Gladstone High School. Sylvia followed her sister Edna into the medical field by taking the Licensed Practical Nurse course at St. Boniface Nursing School. Sylvia worked as a nurse in the Gladstone Hospital, MacGregor Hospital, and Portage General Hospital.
Sylvia was introduced to the love of her life, Paul Asmundson, through her friend Linda Hall at her wedding. Sylvia was the maid of honour and Paul was the best man. Their love story began with trips back and forth to Winnipeg from Gladstone where Paul would pick Sylvia up from St. Boniface on Friday and drive her back to school on Sunday. Paul and Sylvia married with Linda as her maid of honour and Robert (Bob) as the best man.
Sylvia loved the Lord and expressed that love through membership with the Women’s Aglow and teaching Sunday School at the Bethel Pentecostal Church in MacGregor. Sylvia enjoyed many family vacations at Strawberry Lake Christian Retreat in Minnesota. Sylvia would eagerly pack the family’s suitcases while Paul completed the first cut of hay.
Sylvia thoroughly enjoyed the grandchildren that God blessed her with. She loved music, singing, camping, gardening, berry picking, working with the cattle but on the other side of the fence and making sure everyone was fed on the farm. Sylvia was known for helping everyone and anyone she thought needed it. Family was her number one priority and she showed it through unconditional love everyday. She was always involved in her children’s activities like music lessons, hockey, volleyball, 4H, figure skating, hunting, fishing, and all school sports. Sylvia and Paul spent many hours on the road to make memories with their children.

If it were not true He would have told me so
He has gone away to live in that bright city
He’s preparing me a mansion there I know
Sylvia leaves to mourn her son Chad of Southport, MB, grandchildren, Lief and Svenja, daughter Lana Marie and Brett Hagberg, of Mitchell, MB, grandchildren, Halla and Briem, and daughter Naomi and Chris Nixon of Portage la Prairie, MB, grandchildren, Addison, Hannah and Christopher James as well as her beloved sisters Edna and Jim Mattson of Winnipeg, MB and Leona and Robert Beamish, of Hamiota, MB, sisters-in-law, Patricia and Janice Harder of Gladstone, MB. Sylvia will also be remembered by her numerous nieces and nephews and their families.
The family would like to express their thanks for the many prayers, acts of kindness, sympathies, and love given to them. Thank you to the staff of Douglas Campbell Lodge for the care they provided to Sylvia.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 am, April 28, 2023 at Omega Funeral Home, 83 Royal Rd. S., Portage la Prairie followed by Faspa (fellowship and lunch). She will be laid to rest beside her husband Paul at the Westbourne Cemetery following the reception.
