The 50th anniversary of the SRSS is coming up, and to celebrate the school is holding an open house for anyone in the community interested in looking around the school.
Megan Turnley, a teacher at SRSS, says the school really wanted to hold an open house rather than a reunion, as a reunion implies it’s for alumni only.
"And we want this to be former teachers, former EAs, custodial staff, anybody who participated in the construction of the new site,” she says. “Anybody who wants to come and check out the school as it is right now.”
Turnley says it’s a good opportunity for people interested in seeing how the school has changed over the years.
"Just to go back, check it out, and get a bit of nostalgia from when you graduated or when you were last there.”
The evening will start off with a short program where there will be a couple of guest speakers and a performance from the group who performed "The Music Man" this year.
“The Music Man is the only performance that has been done three times in the history of the SRSS, so I think it'd be really neat if somebody came and saw it and was like, ‘I played that part!’”
After the program ends, the open house starts.
"So if you want to tour around, we have teachers who can show you around. If you want to wander around on your own, a self-guided tour, we have maps for that too.”
Turnley says they will also have a trivia game on the history of the SRSS where people will win some prizes.
She notes people can come and go at any point throughout the night, and it will be a great evening for people to come by and see what's new.
“Stop by, check out the school, meet some people, see some familiar faces, or meet some new faces.”
She says the school has changed a lot over the years.
“There's all this new stuff, new facilities, and just new opportunities for the kids.”
Turnley says although many things have changed, a lot of things haven’t changed.
“So it's an interesting little time capsule of both sides of the school.”
The SRSS community open house is on May 4th, and starts at 6pm.
