Moose Jaw Mini Rugby is kicking off its 2023 season in a couple of weeks at the Clark Gillies green space (Third Ave & Oxford St).

The program gives kids ages 6-12 a chance to learn how to play rugby in a no-contact, stress-free, participation-based environment.

Trevor Dawe, Assistant Coach of Moose Jaw Mini Rugby, thinks rugby is a great alternative for kids who may not be into other greater-known sports, such as volleyball or basketball.

"We see more and more kids that are maybe not getting into sports or don't feel like they fit in with the larger, more mainstream things," Dawe remarked. "You want to have lots of different varieties of programming out there so kids can get out, meet new people, and help build those social skills as well."

Dawe says that rugby has a very tight-knit community and often brings people from all over the province together.

"There's a really strong community in Rugby," Dawe commented. "Anywhere you go in life, when you  meet rugby players, you all tend to coalesce around that, so there is a really great community in the province."

Along with the minor program, there is also a summer program for adults who are looking for a recreational way to get out of the house.

The minor season takes place from May 11 to June 22. The first practice is running 5:30 pm - 6:30 pm.
