Sturgeon County Emergency Services have given an update on a five-acre fire just south of Gibbons on Tuesday (May 2).

Just after 2 p.m., Sturgeon County firefighters were called to what was initially a report of some smoke in the area.

"The colour of smoke changed a little bit to a darker colour, so that kind of indicated some more combustion," said Sturgeon County fire chief Pat Mahoney.

The fire started at an outbuilding on a vacant property. It then spread to the surrounding grassy area and into the woods.

"At the height of the fire, we had eight pieces of apparatus with about 16 firefighters from the Gibbons Fire Department and Sturgeon County Emergency Services."

Fire crews brought the blaze under control in about 90 minutes before checking for hot spots until around 6 p.m. They also had crews return on Wednesday (May 3), to double-check for good measure.

With the property being vacant, there were no injuries. The cause of the fire has not been determined.

A fire ban is currently in place for Gibbons, Sturgeon County, and other surrounding areas.
