RYMES, Peter passed away peacefully at Cypress House Personal Care Home in Swift Current on April 3, 2023 at the age of 96. Dad was born at home, near Gibbs, SK, on June 4, 1926. In 1944, once he finished high school, he joined the army. He completed basic and advanced training then went on to Motor Transport Training in Ontario. After demobilization in 1946, he attended the University of Saskatchewan, graduating with an Agriculture Diploma in 1948. He was hired by the Experimental Farm (Swift Current Research and Development Centre) where he worked for 38 years in the Irrigation and Soils Sciences Departments. It is at the Experimental Farm that Dad met and fell in love with Patricia Shields. They married on September 16, 1952. Within a few years they began construction of their home (affectionally known as “The House that Pete Built”), where Dad still lived until shortly before his death. In 1956 they celebrated the arrival of their first child, Robyn, while they were still building their home. Two more children followed, Stephen in 1958 and Patti in 1968. A committed family man and devoted father, Dad took the opportunities of everyday life to teach, love and encourage his children. He was very active in our lives and taught us the virtues of honesty, hard work and attention to detail. Dad and Mom loved to entertain and socialize. One of their greatest joys was going to dances with good friends. Dad was very active. He liked playing badminton and tennis and for years curled in several leagues. Camping was always an enjoyed activity in the summer. A green-thumb, Dad always had beautiful flower beds and a thriving vegetable garden. He enjoyed experimenting with different crops, including asparagus, peppers and melons. His tomatoes were exceptional! A keen birdwatcher, songbirds were always welcomed guests in the yard (but not house sparrows!). Between 1984 and 1990, he became the proud grandpa to five wonderful granddaughters. Over the years, a special loving bond developed with each of them. After retirement in 1986, Dad did not slow down. A talented handyman with a love of building, his first retirement project was constructing his long-awaited garage. Traveling was also a favourite pastime and Dad and Mom took numerous trips and sight-seeing tours. An avid golfer, many hours were spent on local courses, with many laughs, mulligans and a lot of creative scorekeeping! Dad always was a sports enthusiast and enjoyed watching professional sports and excelled at arm-chair coaching! He enjoyed nothing more than having a good chat over coffee or beer with friends. He had a good sense of humour and loved a good tease and laugh. Later in life Mom developed dementia, and while extremely demanding, Dad lovingly cared for her. He took over the cooking, laundry, and all other chores. A wonderful example to his family and a testament to what “in sickness and in health” means. In Dad’s own words, “He had a good run”, a life well lived. We are so grateful for the memories made together and we are all going to miss him tremendously. Peter is lovingly remembered by his children Robyn (Brian) Wilkins, Stephen (Olga) Rymes and Patti (Brian) Dalby; five granddaughters Pamela (TJ) Runnalls, Joanne (Sean) Monson, Katie (Markus) Caswell, Lindsay Rymes and Lisa Rymes (Kent Muderewich); three great-grandsons Keiran, Kayce and Briar; along with several nieces, nephews and good friends. Dad was predeceased by his beloved wife Patricia in 2017; parents William and Georgina Rymes, sister Mary, sister Margaret (Harold) Morton; and in-laws James and Lois Shields, Laura Shields, Mildred (Cec) Nikirk and Jimmy (Joan) Shields. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Tracy and Derryl Wiebe, neighbours whose kindness, thoughtfulness and friendship over the years was unsurpassed and greatly appreciated. The family also wish to thank the doctors, nurses and staff at the Cypress Regional Hospital and the Cypress House Personal Care Home, House 3, for their kindness and compassion and the excellent care provided to Dad.
