Originally from Mexico, Sergio Del Bosque arrived in Swift Current in 2022 and has been playing the game for the past five years

After winning at a recent provincial chess championship in Regina Del Bosque will now represent the province at a national competition in Montreal later this month as he explains.

"I think it will be a hard tournament but I am just preparing for it. I want to get a good place and make an image about how Swift Current can compete in chess."

Del Bosque is a highly skilled student maintaining a 90% average in rigorous courses including Health Science, Mathematics, and Computer Science. He details his love for the strategic game of chess.

"Chess is a psychological game that I enjoy playing alot not only because it involves a lot of different dynamics and different concepts in the game that I feel helps in daily life. It also helps to develop brain capacity and thinking."

A local Go Fund me was set up to help assist Del Bosque with his travels and thanks to community support the fundraiser exceeded its goal.

Del Bosque says after high school he plans to attend the University of Calgary where he would like to study Computer Science Programming and continue his chess journey.

He will be heading to Montreal to compete from May 22nd-24th and wishes to thank the community for all of their support.
