You’re guaranteed a toe tapping, even foot stomping good time when Scott Woods comes to town with his show. He’s a renowned Canadian fiddle champion who can weave tales and jokes throughout the jigs and reels for a truly entertaining experience.
The Flipping Fiddler from Fergus, ON anchored the show, An Old Fashioned Hoedown, with his trademark speed and dexterity. The downhome virtuoso welcomed everyone for the Mother’s Day performance. He was happy to be back on the road after an extended break and looks forward to renewing acquaintances in Humboldt at the Legion Hall.
Among his fiddling flights of fancy was the American standard “Listen to the Mockingbird,” loaded up with a warbling tremolo, stylish musical bird calls (even a woodpecker), and his musical sleight of hand.
Along with Woods was 18 year old Leo Stock, Canada’s reigning step dancing champion. “Spaghetti Legs” as he was dubbed unleashed an amazing display of footwork and rhythmic pyrotechnics, all “in step” with Woods and his band. The multi instrumental prodigy shone with a fiddle and pulling up duties as the group’s drummer.
Woods’ sister, Kendra Norris took a turn as “Hee Haw’s” Minnie Pearl, with a bevy of timeless jokes and a humorous turn at the classic “Side by Side.” Herself an accomplished fiddler and pianist, Norris took a turn in the spotlight playing some of her self-compositions.
Rounding out the ensemble was Germaine Leduc who hails from Saint-Stanilas-de-Kosta, Quebec. His Quebecois influenced fiddle playing added yet another element to a diverse show. He provided keyboards for much of the show but certainly shone on the stage with his musical mates. The trio of backing musicians rotated through instruments, each taking a turn with traditional classics or new compositions.
The three fiddlers came together for a wonderful medley of jigs and reels in honour of the Cape Breton Symphony Fiddlers, a band of musicians formed to back Maritime music legend John Allan Cameron on his TV show. The triple threat wove harmonies throughout the rendition.
There was much more during the show to keep audiences delighted, especially the mothers who were treated to the performance.
