A Fort Sask Sonic volleyball team won nationals over the weekend.
The U15 boys team was in Edmonton competing at nationals, where they tore up the tier 10 playoff bracket, winning gold without losing a single set.
"This is their first season with the club and the first boys' team we've had in Fort Saskatchewan for club volleyball," said Craig Vetsch, the president of the club. "[The first-place finish] is incredible for a first-year team and we are very proud of them."
The boys took some time to find their footing in the tournament, losing two of their first three round-robin games, but quickly found their game. They rattled off five straight wins to take home the championship.
This result seemed almost impossible a year ago when the club wasn't completely sure if they would be even able to form a boy's team.
"We weren't sure if we were going to have enough interest at all," said Vetsch. "We got kids from Two Hills, kids from Ardrossan, a few from Edmonton, and only a couple of local ones from Fort Saskatchewan."
Embracing that rag-tag group mentality, Vetsch is impressed with how the team was able to pull things together for a fantastic end to their inaugural season.
"For them to grow as a team that much over a season is truly incredible," said Vetsch.
He also gave plenty of credit to coaches Joel Percy and Gurprashad Mann for helping the club grow to new heights.
The boys weren't the only Sonic team that found success over the weekend, as the U16 girls played to a third-place nationals finish over in Calgary.
