There was a fun evening of LEGOs and robotics at the Fort Saskatchewan BGC last week.
Supported by Dow Chemical, the BGC invited parents, friends, and community members to attend the First LEGO League Explore festival on Wednesday (May 17).
First LEGO League teaches science, technology, engineering, and math to children through hands-on learning.
The festival featured dioramas showing the different levels of robotics the kids worked on, and even had the CyberEagles robotics team showing kids how to use these robots to solve puzzles.
Jess Macdonald, one of the coaches for the league, spoke about the importance of teaching children the fundamentals of engineering.
"It's very hands-on and interactive, so the kids have a lot of fun, and I think even us as coaches have even more fun," laughed Macdonald.
Trina Terry, the out-of-school coordinator with the BGC, said that the program was incredibly popular.
"Unfortunately, we only had 12 spots to begin the program with. We had a waitlist a mile long," said Terry. "We've got about another hundred kids that want to take part."
Terry added that the BGC is looking to get more coaches and team members to help grow the program in the coming years.
The First LEGO League Explore program is available to children between Grade 2 and Grade 4. Those interested in signing up for the program as a volunteer can visit the First Robotics website here.
