Some major changes have come to the Fort Saskatchewan Transfer and Eco Station.

The entire station has been redesigned, with a fully paved site and designated pull-out areas for users to sort through their materials.

Sadie Miller, the waste program supervisor for the City of Fort Saskatchewan, said that there are also changes to the way residents are charged for what they dump.

"User fees will be charged based on the weight of the material, rather than the volume," said Miller, who added that the site also has space for more services, including their new bicycle tire recycling area.

"Previously, we only accepted tires from motor vehicles."

The hours at the transfer and eco station have also changed. Over the winter the station was open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day. Now, the hours have changed to:

  • Monday and Tuesday:  9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Wednesday: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Thursday to Sunday: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Like the winter, the transfer station closes for statutory holidays.

As for what the future holds for the transfer and eco station, Miller said that they're hoping to bring in an area where people can recycle Styrofoam and similar materials.

"It's just more streamlined, there's going to be better signage, sorting requirements will be clearer, we'll have more capacity for your materials," said Miller. "Overall, I think it will be a better and overall positive experience for all users."
