Morden Police Chief Brad Neduzak wanted to bring a new traffic stop to the attention of motorists, pedestrians, and people coming to the City of Morden.
"Traffic, pedestrians, citizens will notice a change along Stephen Street, the Morden City Council has decided to take a step in trying to make Stephen St. a little bit safer with the amount of traffic and pedestrians at certain intersections. There is now a new four-way stop at 7th and Stephen St. in Morden."
He explained the rationale behind the decision.
"We felt that this was a significant intersection where the majority of accidents happen, just due to the nature of the businesses and the congestion at that particular intersection being quite busy. That four-way stop would help not only slow traffic down, but it would also allow safer passage through the intersection for traffic both ways. This way it'll be easier for traffic to be able to get across through the intersection, safely."
When asked about those pointing out vehicles parking in front of the yellow curb lines at intersections in Morden, Neduzak had this to say.
"Those are starting to be monitored a little more closely. We've asked our bylaw officer to keep on top of that, which he has been. And now with the stop signs there, I think it'll be even more important to take note of that and make sure vehicles are back from the intersection to allow vehicles to stop and be able to see pedestrians as well as traffic before continuing on."
Neduzak added one more benefit to implementing this new four-way stop.
"I think it will allow for speeds to be limited as well, when vehicles have to come to a stop along Stephen St. I know we've had some fairly significant speeds going down Stephen St. So, this as well will allow vehicles to slow down and have to stop at the stop sign. Anything that we can do, and council can do to keep the streets safer, I think that's a positive step."
