Construction has begun on a section of 95 Street in Fort Saskatchewan.
Crews have been hard at work since Monday, closing off the section of the street east of 99 Avenue as part of a surface reconstruction project.
"We've already started to remove the existing asphalt and then [we will] remove the sub-base so we can then build it back up again," said Leo Girard, the manager of the engineering with the city.
The reason for the construction is due to the city noticing signs of deterioration on that stretch of road.
"There was some settling, some cracking of the asphalt," said Girard. "It's been a while since the road has been constructed previously and it's due for a repair."
"Some of the curbs have deteriorated to the extent that they need to be replaced as well."
A detour has been put in place that will force westbound traffic on the road to take the adjacent boulevard, though the city is urging non-local traffic to try to avoid the area as a way to prevent congestion.
"We'd rather people use 101 Street and Highway 15 and avoid this intersection altogether if they can," said Girard.
The road is expected to be closed until July 21.
