The City of Fort Saskatchewan will be celebrating its seniors next week.

On Thursday (June 1) Mayor Gale Katchur proclaimed that June 5 to 11 will be known as Seniors' Week in the city.

"Seniors play an integral role in our community, serving as mentors, volunteers, and leaders," said Katchur. "Their stories and life experiences shape the fabric of our society, leaving an indelible mark on the lives they touch."

"By celebrating Seniors' Week, we hope to highlight the importance of their presence and the positive influence they have on our lives.”

The city has a few events planned for seniors, including the return of a popular event.

"On Tuesday, June 6, we are going to be holding a seniors' tea at the Dow Centennial Centre," said Toni Van Velzen, the senior coordinator with the city.

"Tickets are required for the event and over 300 tickets have been given away for it."

The seniors' tea will also feature live entertainment from Denim, a local band. Van Velzen said this is the first time they've hosted the seniors' tea in a few years.

"We haven't been able to have it since before the pandemic," said Van Velzen. "Everyone is excited to have it again this year."

"It's gonna be a great afternoon!"

Outside of that, the city will be running a nominate a senior program where residents can nominate seniors to receive special doorstep drop-offs throughout the week.

Van Velzen is excited to honour such important members of the community.

"It is a time to celebrate and show appreciation for all senior contributions. I feel honoured to work within this community and for many seniors to share stories with me."

"All seniors touch so many lives and continue to do so as mentors, volunteers, and leaders in the community."
