104 Street in Fort Saskatchewan will be closed for quite a while.
Construction crews began work on the road on Monday (June 5) to replace water, sewer, and road infrastructure.
"It's part of our neighbourhood rehabilitation program," said Leo Girard, the manager of engineering with the city. "We are currently in there starting construction removing the existing asphalt and then we are going to dig down to get at the water, sewer, and storm lines and replace those."
The affected area includes 104 Street from 99 Avenue to 100 Avenue.
Work is extensive, and residents can expect the closure to last at least four months.
"The construction in its entirety is going to take until mid-October," said Girard. "We want to work with the businesses in the area and maybe open up areas sooner as they become available."
On top of the infrastructure improvements, residents walking in the area should expect a few changes once construction wraps up.
"The finished product will really enhance the look and feel of 104 Street," said Girard. "It'll be more pedestrian friendly and hopefully it will encourage some more commercial use of 104 Street."
"I know it's a little bit of pain right now for businesses in the area, we do apologize for that and we appreciate their patience, but the end result will yield great results."
