Strathcona County Emergency Services (SCES) has given an update on the fire that hit a rural area of the county earlier this week.
The fire began on Wednesday (June 7) evening near Township Road 522 and Range Road 221.
"This was a fire that was in the center of a person's yard," said Devin Capcara, the deputy chief of operations with SCES. "The gentlemen who owned the place had a lot of vehicles, tanks, tires, and a lot of a lot in his yard."
Apparently, the fire was caused by welding sparks making contact with poplar fuzz, which Capcara added can lead to fires spreading very quickly.
Emergency services had to take the owner of the property to hospital with second-degree burns to his legs and arms. He has since been treated and released.
"We kept that fire out of the house and barn, but quite a few vehicles and farm implement and equipment were lost."
Crews had put out the blaze by 3:30 a.m.
Strathcona County has implemented a fire ban due to the rise in dry, hot, and windy weather.
