The Swift Current City RCMP had an interesting situation on their hands last weekend which began after receiving a call early Saturday morning regarding a theft.

At 8:12 a.m., a caller notified RCMP that he had caught a male going through his vehicle on the 1500 block of Memorial Drive.

Although the individual fled upon being caught, the caller was able to locate the male's wallet on the ground.

Staff Sergeant Evan Gordon, of the Swift Current City RCMP, explained that the investigation continued throughout the morning and included statements, reviewing video surveillance, and general patrols.

“A little over four hours later, the Swift Current City detachment received a 911 call from a male who reported that his vehicle had been damaged, it just so happened that his vehicle had been in that same area,” he stated. “When police officers responded and investigated, they determined that this male and this vehicle were related to the previous incident of theft, and the male was arrested at that time.”

After investigating, it was determined that the male had caused the damage on his own in an effort to cover up the theft he had committed.

No charges have been laid, however, the male was arrested for theft and the matter is still under investigation.

“The RCMP would just like to remind people that if you do come across a crime being committed to your property, definitely give us a call as soon as possible,” Gordon added. “We certainly don't recommend confronting people that are in the act of committing crimes, especially property crimes. Get as much detail as you can, keep yourself safe, notify the RCMP, and officers will investigate from there.”
