A Fort Saskatchewan fastball team captured a silver medal in St. Albert over the weekend.

The all-girls U13 Sliders made it all the way to the championship game during the 24th Annual Fastball St. Albert Invitational Tournament before losing 6-1 to the Airdrie Angels.

"We played a total of six games over the weekend," said coach Dave Duncan. "The young ladies did a fantastic job, it was a lot of ball for them."

"We made it all the way to the final, unfortunately, fell a little short."

The journey to get to the finals was a wild one, as the Sliders had to overcome a seven-run deficit in their semi-final matchup.

"It was probably the first early game we had this year at 8 a.m. so maybe we had a little sleepy start," said Duncan. "We pulled it off in the end in the bottom half of the last inning with a walk-off hit by Moira McKee."

The team lost just two games all tournament long, both of which came at the hands of Airdrie. Duncan thinks that, despite those losses, it was a good experience for the team.

"Airdrie is a tough team, they are probably the toughest team we faced this year," said Duncan. "The girls learned so much this weekend, coming into a tournament with nice weather, playing six games in three days really helps them to learn the game and love the game."

"It was all-around a great growth weekend for us."

The Sliders will now shift their focus back to their league play, where they are currently first in their division with a sparkling 11-0 record with just two weeks remaining.

League championships will be hosted in Leduc at the end of June.

"We've set the goal to go ahead and try to win the league championship this year."
