The annual Bike Safety Event in Swift Current finally returned to the city on Monday afternoon after the event was initially postponed due to unfavourable weather.

The event featured helmet and bike inspections, lessons in hand signals and safety awareness, cycling activities, and more.

To bring the event to fruition this year, the City teamed up with the Saskatchewan Health Authority and the Kiwanis Club of Swift Current.

Tiffany Powell, acquired brain injury coordinator for the Southwest with Saskatchewan Health Authority, was at the event in hopes of preventing acquired brain injuries from occurring.

“I think we tried to make it really fun while still educating them on the need for proper fitting helmets, proper bike safety, and proper road rules,” she explained. “So, hopefully, they can take that out into the community, share with their friends, obviously, be safe, reduce accidents and reduce the risk for head injuries.”

Located in Riverdene Park, families also had the chance to utilize the new Kiwanis Bike Park, located just up the pathway.

In response to being asked what he enjoyed most about riding bikes, one eager participant, Owen Dwyer, replied, “I like going fast.”

Kiwanis Bike Safety Event volunteer, Eldon Moberg, added that the event is a great starting point for young children to learn.

“At any point in time, you can start going well I have to check this, or I have to do that,” he stated. “Maybe they're not able to do it right away, but at least they think of it every year and get dad, or mom, or somebody involved to be able to help it out so that the bike is in good working order when they get to start each year.”
