Hannah Kalamoutsos has been named the valedictorian for the class of 2023 at Strathcona Christian Academy Secondary in Sherwood Park.

With the school being K-12, Kalamoutsos said she spent every year of her school career so far at Strathcona Christian.

"When I started high school, my parents asked if I wanted to move to a different school, but I said that I wanted to stay where I was."

Kalamoutsos said she found math and english especially interesting but said the one subject she lacked interest in was gym.

"I quit that as soon as I was allowed to," joked Kalamoutsos.

Kalamoutsos added that she found her drive for knowledge through her parents, who both have experience as engineers.

"Watching them, even though they didn't push me to it, it was a standard that did exist to an extent."

Despite knowing she was in the riding, Kalamoutsos was not expecting her name to get called, as the process was determined through a vote between students and teachers.

"I didn't think I would be the person people voted for," said Kalamoutsos. "I was surprised."

After a summer of camping, Kalamoutsos hopes to head to college where she'll pursue a degree in psychology.

"Initially I had wanted to go to social work, but I can't jump out of high school into a social work degree because I'm not yet 19," said Kalamoutsos. "With psychology, I can jump to a lot of different things."

The grad ceremony at Strathcona Christian Academy Secondary was on June 2.
