Over the weekend, Swift Current Christian Taekwondo hosted its annual "Breaking Boards for Freedom" event at the Church of the Open Bible.

The event, aimed at raising funds to combat human trafficking and slavery, was a tremendous success, with participants breaking a staggering number of boards and raising just under $20,000 for the International Justice Mission (IJM).

Head Instructor, Gary Voysey, highlighted the commitment and dedication of the participants.

“I am more than just proud of my students, I'm inspired by them because, you know, we hear all young people today, young people today. Well, I've got a group of young people that. Are stepping up and. Wanting to make a difference and so as an instructor or school owner, that's just wow.

The event saw a diverse range of participants, spanning from four years old to a 52-year-old.

All of the funds raised during the event will be donated directly to support IJM's efforts in fighting human trafficking.

Unlike some other charities, IJM ensures that every penny goes toward helping the victims, providing both immediate rescue operations and essential aftercare programs. These aftercare initiatives aim to empower survivors by offering vocational training, education, and support from social workers to help them recover and rebuild their lives.

The fundraising for the event primarily relied on pledges, where students approached friends, family, and community members to contribute to their board-breaking efforts. Additionally, a donation jar was available at the door, and an online auction was held on Facebook to further raise funds for IJM.

Voysey extended his heartfelt appreciation to the people of Swift Current and the surrounding area, recognizing their generous contributions.

"To raise $20,000 in today's economy speaks volumes about the great giving nature of the people in Swift Current,” he stated. “Thanks to everybody who helped make a difference in the world."

The success of Swift Current Christian Taekwondo's "Breaking Boards for Freedom" event not only highlights the exceptional martial arts skills of its participants but also showcases their compassion and determination to fight against human trafficking.
