The new and improved Transfer and Eco Station in Fort Saskatchewan is officially open.
On Thursday (June 22) morning, city officials met at the station for a presentation and tour of the new facility, paved with recycled asphalt.
Construction on the project began in August of 2021 with a budget of $4.27 million.
"We've increased the size of the site from approximately 8,500 square metres to 14,700 square metres," said Sadie Miller, waste program supervisor with the city. "There's ample space to move around and safely collect bins."
As the old site was at capacity with many services not available, this new upgrade provides more recycling options, a better user experience, and streamlined traffic flow.
Some of these new services include:
- Elevated garbage drop off
- Disposal by weight
- Oil containment building
- New household hazardous waste building
- New Compactors
"We have more space available for extra services, so we are in the process of getting Styrofoam recycling set up," said Miller. "I know a lot of packaging material has Styrofoam."
The following materials are free for residents to drop off:
- Scrap metal
- Cardboard
- Recycling
- Tires
- Propane Tanks
- Batteries
- Electronics
- Used Motor Oil
- Glycol
- Paint
Mattresses can also be disposed of for $15 each, regardless of size. Contractors can also drop off their yard waste for 16 cents a kilogram, while Fort Saskatchewan residents can drop off yard waste for free.
