RCMP have located and arrested 33-yeear-old Mervin Poorman, charged with failure to stop after an accident resulting in death. The victim was a child who was declared deceased at the scene.

Poorman was taken into custody on June 23 in Cold Lake, Alberta

The  fatal hit and run took place on the evening of June 22 
on George Gordon First Nation. 

It's unknown when Poorman will be returned to Saskatchewan and when his first court appearance will be.

Officers would like to thank the public for providing information which assisted with the investigation.

The following update has been provided by RCMP in regard to the hit and run fatality on the George Gordon First Nation.

On June 22, 2023 at approximately 5:50 p.m., Punnichy RCMP received a report of a collision involving a small child on George Gordon First Nation.

Investigation determined a pick-up truck struck a child, then fled. The child was declared deceased by EMS at the scene.

Now that next of kin have been notified, we can confirm the victim has been identified as a one-year-old male from George Gordon First Nation. Our thoughts are with his family at this tragic time. Victim services have been made available to them.

Punnichy RCMP and neighbouring detachments have been looking for the suspect and pick-up truck since and following up on information received. Saskatchewan RCMP’s Regina General Investigation Section and Forensic Identification Services are also assisting with the investigation.

On June 23, Punnichy RCMP charged 33-year-old Mervin Poorman from Kawacatoose First Nation with one count, failure to stop after an accident resulting in death, Section 320.16(3), Criminal Code, and one count, operation of a vehicle while prohibited, Section 320.18, Criminal Code (Information 90470697).

A warrant has been issued for his arrest and Punnichy RCMP are actively working to locate him.

Mervin Poorman is described as approximately 6’3” tall and 300 lbs. He has brown hair and brown eyes. He has a number of tattoos on his arms, including the name “Poorman” on his left forearm and one described as the “Browning” logo on his right hand. A photo of him is attached.

The pick-up truck, a black 2008 Dodge Ram with Saskatchewan license plate 274 MNW, has not been located and police continue to search for it.

A fatal hit and run on the George Gordon First Nation has RCMP asking for the public’s assistance in locating suspects.  

Punnichy RCMP are seeking the public’s assistance to locate a black 2008 Dodge quad-cab truck with Saskatchewan plates: 274 MNW.  

RCMP investigation has determined this truck was involved in a fatal hit and run on the evening of June 22 in the community of George Gordon First Nation. Punnichy RCMP received a report around 5:50 p.m. and responded immediately. The truck had already departed, and investigators are currently searching for it. 

If you see this truck, or know where it is, call 911 immediately. Do not approach the vehicle or the occupants. 

No further information is available as the investigation is in its early stages. More details, including the identity of the deceased individual, will be released.
