Hundreds of people packed the Uniplex grounds for a sensory experience that only the area’s Filipino community could provide. The Humboldt Music and Food Festival, in celebration of Filipino Heritage Month, delighted the crowds on Saturday and Sunday this past weekend. The street fair style celebration hosted a wide variety of food vendors, serving favourites such as pancit noodles, grilled pork belly, charcoal barbecued skewers and much more.
Organizers Leo and Lorena Taquiqui and Ferdinand and Maybelline Mendoza, with the support of many others in the community, worked to provide unique cultural experiences. Dancers from different parts of the Philippine Islands, including those from aboriginal cultures, performed intricate maneuvers in colourful costumes. A LeRoy dancing group took to the stage, while other performers were from further afield. Musicians from the Humboldt area and those from the cities brought both popular tunes and songs from the Filipino sphere.
Various dignitaries spoke at the opening ceremonies on Saturday, including Carlton Trail – Eagle Creek MP Kelly Block.
“I want to thank of you for choosing to make Canada your home,” Block said, addressing the Filipino attendees and performers. “I also want to acknowledge and thank everyone who put all the hard work in to make today possible and to make this day a success.”
Mayor Michael Behiel talked about the energy and vibrancy that the Filipino community brings to the Humboldt area.
“We thank those involved with the Humboldt Music and Food Festival, and we encourage the inclusivity and friendship it brings to our city. Humboldt is a diverse, accepting and safe community regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, religion or any other factor that may be used to differentiate an individual, group or organization.”
It was truly a party that brought people together in the spirit of celebration amid the joyous sights and sounds shared by the Filipino community.
