The Redwater golf course is feeling the love after the community rallied around it following some overnight thefts.
On the night of June 21, vandals broke into the course and stole all but two of the course's custom-made hole signs, all of the sponsor signs, and all the course flags as well.
"The vandals came in the middle of the night and they basically ripped the wooden signs out," said Byron Gray, the president of non-profit society. "They took eight of the wooden signs."
"So basically, they removed a bunch of material that have no value to anyone other than the golf course. They don't have a resale value, it's just straight old vandalism."
It might not seem like losing a bunch of signs is all that bad, but when you take into account that the signs were custom-made carved into wood specifically made by a local resident, that loss becomes a bit more personal.
"It's professionally done and the fella who does the wood signs it's his retirement project company and he does really good laser work in making these signs," said Gray.
Once word got out about the theft, Redwater resident Jeff Pelletier set up a GoFundMe page to help recoup the losses.
"The value that we put on the signs to replace them was over $5000," said Gray. "He started a GoFundMe to raise that amount of money and it took them two days."
"That was unexpected and much appreciated."
Unlike most golf courses, the Redwater course is completely non-profit which makes extra costs like this a bit harder to recoup.
"We would've been either out-of-pocket or we would have had to put in a claim on our insurance which a $500 deductible would have cost us some money but it would have also affected our insurance."
"We've never had a GoFundMe associated with the golf course, it was much appreciated."
The course plans to use those funds to commission replacement signs and to up the security at the course to ensure thefts like this don't happen again.
"When the signs were installed, there was no thought that someone would steal the signs because there was no benefit to do that," said Gray. "[These new signs] will be secured in a much more robust manner going forward."
