Natural gas flares conducted by SaskEnergy began yesterday at 7:00 p.m. located at the Herbert Meter Station.

Located approximately 12.5 kilometres northwest of the Town of Herbert, the flare will be conducted from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. until July 13, and again on July 14 from 7:00 a.m. until 10:00 a.m.

During the process, a portion of the gas line will be isolated from the system and natural gas will be removed from the line in a controlled burn.

The practice of flaring is a standard in the industry that takes place when natural gas needs to be removed from a line.

It reduces the carbon footprint of the vented natural gas by 85 percent and is necessary to perform maintenance work on the natural gas line system in the area. Flares support the safe and reliable delivery of gas to SaskEnergy’s customers.

40-foot flames emitting from the temporarily attached flare stack may be seen by residents and drivers in the area.

Times of conducted flares are subject to change based on operating requirements.

Residential natural gas service in the area will not be affected and SaskEnergy has notified the RM of Excelsior No. 166 and the local fire department.

To ensure public safety, the area around the flares will be supervised.
