The Summer Reading Program at the Swift Current Branch of the Chinook Regional Library has officially begun in Swift Current as a way to ignite young minds and inspire reading throughout the summer months.

The program kicked off yesterday afternoon with a party that featured the Saskatchewan Science Centre demonstrating exciting experiments for the kids.

The program will continue throughout the summer with two regular events on Mondays and Wednesdays, noted Connor Kurtz, the Swift Current branch manager for the Chinook Regional Library.

“On Mondays, we will be running our Steam Club sponsored by MicroAge, and on Wednesdays, we will be running our Summer Story Time Adventures program,” he elaborated. “Our Steam Club program is for older kids, usually six and up, and our Summer Story Time Adventures is for six and under.”

The Steam Club focuses on science, technology, engineering, art, and math and allows kids to look at how technology interacts.

The Summer Storytime Adventures Program, presented by Sputtergotch, will feature a variety of stories, songs, and movement activities for young ones as they develop literacy skills and a love for reading.

In addition to the weekly events, children are also able to compete for prizes by completing books and filling out a reading log.

“We traditionally also give out reading logs so kids can keep track of what they've read and turn those in to us at the library,” he explained. “However, you're not just reading just for the pure joy of it, we also do have a number of prices that we will have on offer at the library for our program participants.”

The top two readers will be awarded a brand-new bicycle, courtesy of the Swift Current Kiwanis Club.

Reading logs can be picked up at the library at any time. The final day that logs can be returned is August 26.
