Last week in Swift Current Provincial Court, Adam Kormendy received his sentence after initially being charged with Robbery using a Firearm in December of 2022.

The sentencing comes after Kormendy pleaded guilty to three charges, including robbery, unauthorized possession of a firearm, and possession of a firearm contrary to a prohibition order.

The court handed down a sentence of 729 days in jail, which is equal to two years minus one day.

Due to his time spent on remand, Kormendy received credit for 302 days, leaving him with 427 days left to serve as June 28.

Kormendy initially entered a not guilty plea, intending to go to trial. However, he later changed his plea to guilty, accepting responsibility for the crimes.

In addition to jail time, Kormendy received other court orders. A DNA order was made, requiring him to provide a DNA sample for the national database. Furthermore, he is now subject to a lifetime prohibition on firearms.

The sentencing stemmed from an incident at a local business in the Town of Eastend when an employee reported a male attempting to leave without paying for his fuel.

Upon exiting the building, the male proceeded to point a long rifle at him, before fleeing the scene.

The suspect’s vehicle was located in Eastend a short time later and Shaunavon RCMP and Conservation Officers were able to get the suspect to exit the residence, where he was arrested without incident.

During the proceedings, the weapons used in the armed robbery were forfeited and Kormendy was also required to pay a small amount of restitution.
