Margaret Alexander, a second grader from St. Albert, has written and published her book at just seven years old.
Different Angel tells the story of kindness and acceptance through the eyes of an angel born with golden wings, while all other angels have silver wings.
"Nobody wanted to be friends with her because she looks different, but she was very kind and loved animals and birds but lived all by herself," said Alexander. "One day she went to an angel who lived nearby. He had silver wings like all of the other angels. She asked him, 'Would you like to be friends with me?' He says, 'Let me think.'"
"The next day he says, 'It doesn't matter what you look like or what the colour of your wings is, it matters that you have a kind heart. I want to be your friend,"
Alexander first got the story for her book when she was five years old, making paper angels for Christmas with her friends. They ran out of silver paper, so she made her paper angels with gold.
"All of my friends said 'that's not an angel', and began laughing at me. I was very upset when I went to bed," added Alexander. "In my dreams, an angel came to me and told me that story."
When writing the book, Alexander was originally going to use her own art before deciding on using a professional illustrator. She used Amazon's self-publishing capabilities to make her book available to the public.
Since being published, Alexander has read to kindergarten students at places such as Victoria School of the Arts, and three classes at École Marie Poburan, which is also where she goes to school.
Alexander said it was a dream come true to write a book and that she will write another one once she gets another idea.
