The U17 women's Sherwood Park Titans lacrosse team brought home provincial gold over the weekend.

The girls competed at provincials, which took place in Leduc, against the Beaumont Raiders and the Calgary Fury.

Team Manager Tanis Andree said that they almost didn't compete at all.

"Six of them are in summer school, and our first game was on Friday at 8:30," Andree said. "But the girls made special arrangements with their teachers and pulled it together. Instead of pulling out, we ended up winning the gold, which was pretty amazing."

The Titans' first game was against the Raiders, where the Titans took the win 5-4.

"They're a very formidable team. Very great competition with them. It was close the whole time."

Their next game was against Fury, where the Titans took the win with a five-point lead, ending the game at 7-2.

Because of only three teams competing in the championship, the Titans were given a bye straight to the gold medal game, where they eventually played against the Fury.

The Fury put up a fight but were eventually taken out by the Titans again by a score of 5-3.

"They were so happy. We've just had so much going on in the background. They're just the most amazing resilient bunch of girls." said Andree, adding that the team's theme song is Chumbawumbas 'Tub Thumping'.

Their win marks the end of a significant season for the Titans, as six of their players will be graduating from minor lacrosse.

"It was a huge deal for them. Not only making provincials but winning the gold in provincials."

The U17 women weren't the only team to bring home a medal in provincials, the U13 women brought home silver while the U15 women's 2 team took home bronze.
