According to The City of Airdrie, the wind and rain have caused damage to a building along Railway Avenue.
Crews were on the scene on Monday and closed Railway Avenue between the CP Rail tracks and Mackenzie Way for several hours. Motorists and pedestrians were asked to avoid the area and give crews room to work.
"The damage is also affecting some businesses that have needed to close unexpectedly."
Social media posts from residents noted that fire crews were on the scene and that some of the damage sustained was to a roof of a building that had partially blown away.
Although Airdrie is no longer under a severe thunderstorm warning, there were reports of gusting winds earlier this afternoon. Forecasts are currently predicting that there may be another risk of severe thunderstorms this evening.
Due to the extreme wind gusts, earlier on Monday, FortisAlberta was called to an electrical outage in the city when a downed tree damaged a powerline. Thousands of customers were affected though power has since been restored.
