The Edmonton Police Service (EPS) is investigating a fatal crash between three vehicles that happened over the weekend in northeast Edmonton.

On Sunday (July 16) afternoon, a 41-year-old woman driving a 2007 Toyota Matrix was travelling down 153 Avenue. When she approached the intersection of 66 Street there was a collision between the Matrix and a 2015 Toyota Rav4, driven by a 47-year-old female with an 86-year-old passenger.

The collision caused the Matrix to also collide with a third vehicle.

At first, injuries were considered minor, and EMS was called as a precaution. While checking on the 86-year-old passenger of the Rav4, her health suddenly worsened. She was rushed to hospital where she passed away.

Major Collision Investigative Services (MCIS) have taken over the investigation. Speed and impairment were not factors in the crash, but they are determining whether a car had driven through a red light.

Anyone with footage of the vehicles involved or the incident itself is asked to reach out to EPS by calling 780-423-4567. Anonymous information can also be submitted to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online.
