On Wednesday, World War II veteran Leo Saretsky celebrated his 100th birthday with friends, family and Humboldt Royal Canadian Legion members.
The Humboldt Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion gifted Leo with a handmade Quilt of Valour for his sacrifice to Canada in the Second World War. A social media post by the Humboldt Branch explained that Leo was a Seaman who was trained as a telegraphist. During the war he was stationed on the HMCS Trentonian when it was torpedoed and sunk in the English Channel.
Leo also recently received the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal honouring those who had served their countries in the military or in protective services.
The post went on to say, “To have seen, experienced and witnessed what Leo has in his lifetime is truly mind blowing. 100 years is an incredible milestone most can only dream of. What a privilege and honour it was to celebrate you, Leo. May the hugs stitched into this quilt give you comfort, strength and love. All the best in your next trip around the sun!”
