Environment Canada is currently tracking a severe thunderstorm, located 10 kilometres southwest of Swift Current.

Meteorologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada, Terri Lang, elaborated on the storm cell currently moving through the Southwest.

“It looks like the one thunderstorm cell went a little bit south of Swift Current,” she stated. “It does look like there was probably some hail in there. We haven't had any reports, but it looked like just from the radar that there could have been some hail in there and certainly some locally heavy downpours.”

Lang added that activity can be expected for the next couple of hours.

On the radar, we can still see there's more shower activity in behind as well,” she elaborated. “So, it's still going to be a little bit stormy for the next few hours, folks should be prepared for that.”

Lang noted that more cells could be expected in the near future as the storm is part of a system coming from Alberta.

“It's associated with this unstable air mass that's coming through,” she explained. “We'll probably see a few more of these over the next day or so just because of the way the air is able to support thundershowers.”

So far, today’s showers have brought 4.2 millimetres of precipitation to Swift Current, while yesterday's showers only contained 1 millimetre of moisture.

“For the month so far only 13 millimetres,” Lang stated regarding precipitation totals. “But, we're only part of the way through the month.”
