The Swift Current Community Youth Initiative has welcomed a new addition to its team, seasoned social worker and counsellor, Ralph Aman.
Aman, who brings over two decades of social work experience to the table, said there are several factors that drew him to the position.
"The Center overall has done a really good job in terms of helping youth and families throughout the area," Aman shared. "In terms of the counselling side of it, it's a real opportunity to help young people and families who may be experiencing some struggles that counselling can help with."
Aman's role at The Center primarily involves providing individual and family counselling services. He focuses on helping youth, parents, and families facing various challenges, including relationship struggles, mental health concerns, and distress.
The experienced social worker, who holds a Master of Social Work degree from the University of Regina, officially started in the new role on July 17.
“Certainly, there is a need for counselling services for youth and for families here,” Aman stated. “I've had an opportunity to meet with some individuals and families so far.”
According to Youth Mental Health Canada, an estimated 1.2 million children and youth in Canada are affected by mental illness. However, less than 20 percent will receive appropriate treatment. By age 25, approximately 20 percent of Canadians will have developed a mental illness.
It also states that Canada’s youth suicide rate is the third highest in the industrialized world.
Swift Current Community Youth Initiative offers a range of services, including drop-in programs for youth, counselling, mentoring, and special events throughout the year.
Individuals seeking counselling services can schedule appointments directly through The Center's website.
