The much-anticipated inclusive park project in Swift Current is reaching its final stages of completion, promising a safe place to play for everyone.

Mike Newell, the Parks Manager with the city of Swift Current, elaborated on the progress of the project.

“It's looking really good,” he stated. “The main installation of the structure itself is completed, and the rubber pour and play surface is in, the asphalt parking lot and the concrete curbing that we put along it is in as well. So, we're just getting ready to do some irrigation, final grading, and some fencing.”

Newell added that The City is optimistic that the play structure will be ready for use by the end of the month.

“We're getting really close, we're trying to shoot for towards the end of August,” he elaborated. “We're still working on a grand opening official date. We want to invite all of our wonderful supporters we had in the community, including Plewis Automotive Group, for this great event that we're planning on throwing when it's open.”

Newell also acknowledged the initial challenges of the project due to issues with the supply chain that impacted the project’s timeline.

Despite the setbacks, the project gained momentum in 2023, culminating in a supervised installation from the supplier of Playgrounds-R-Us for the 9,000-square-foot playground.

“It's the biggest one the city is going to have, and there's a lot of special implements in here that we're brand new to city staff,” Newell noted. “So, it's definitely a unique challenge to see how everything came together, but we're so happy that that structure is in place now and we're almost ready to go with members of the public to be able to go on-site and families and kids play on it together.”

Additionally, Newell reminded the public to continue to be patient as the finishing touches take place.

“I know everybody can see the playground on a daily basis,” he stated. “When you drive by, it's sitting there and it's very tempting for members of the public. They want to get in there, but just remember, please be patient and when we hit that grand opening date, we'll all be there to celebrate with you and the doors will be open.”
