A seven-metre long and two-metre wide sinkhole that formed on the TransCanada Highway 1 caused detours on Thursday.

The sinkhole is in the eastbound lanes between the Norquay Road Exit and the exit at Compound Road to the Banff Industrial District. However, according to Banff National Park officials, as of Thursday evening, Highway 1 is now re-opened to eastbound traffic, however, travellers should still expect some delays.

Earlier on Thursday afternoon, The Town of Banff stated that Parks Canada crews, Standish Towing, RCMP and Town Municipal Enforcement were helping detour TransCanada traffic through town at all main intersections.

Earlier in the day, the sinkhole had forced eastbound highway traffic to be detoured at Norquay Road into [Banff] town, left at Railway Avenue, down Elk Street to Banff Avenue and north back to the Highway.
