The Swift Current Rampage Lacrosse team is gearing up to host four Try Lacrosse Nights, aimed at introducing youth to the fast-paced world of lacrosse.
Brandon Wessner, Division Coordinator with the Rampage, elaborated on the upcoming events.
“We're hosting four nights of Try Lacrosse for our minor league divisions,” he stated. “We're just looking to get everybody back out on the field, have a bit of a new experience taking the try sessions out to the outdoor field for once, and maybe try to reach out to a group that normally wouldn't expect to try the sport out.”
The first event will take place tonight at the Irwin School field. The first group will cater to 5 to 11-year-olds from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., followed by a session for 12 to 16-year-olds from 7:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m.
Traditionally, these events were held in the spring, however, the team recognized the need for a fresh approach.
“We usually try to host these kinds of nights in the spring, but everybody's kind of winding down with hockey season and stuff like that, so maybe they want a break, they're not looking for the next big sport,” Wessner stated. “Hopefully, taking this avenue, we should be able to get some more exposure out and get a few new faces involved.”
In an effort to reach as many youth as possible, the Try Lacrosse Nights are entirely free.
“Just come out, see if see if it's for your youth, and hopefully they enjoy it,” Wessner encouraged. “Maybe Mom and Dad will come to help coach or ref or anything like that.”
All that's required to attend one of the four nights is a hockey helmet with a cage or visor, appropriate footwear, and if available, hockey gloves. Sticks will be provided for those who don't have them. Registration is not required to attend.
When it comes to winter camps, the anticipated start date is in mid-November, running through March. These sessions are designed to keep everyone sharp and provide an opportunity for newcomers to get up to speed with the game before the regular season kicks off in April.
“Just come on out, try it out, have some fun, and even if our current players want to bring a couple of friends out, by all means, show up have some fun, and introduce them to the fastest game on two feet,” Wessner concluded.
