In nine days' time, on the morning of Friday, October 13, the 40th Avenue Interchange to QEII will officially open to the public.

According to The City of Airdrie, the project is a, 'monumental transportation infrastructure project set to transform the region's connectivity and economic prospects.'

Devin Dreeshen, Minister of Transportation and Economic Corridors said that the completion of the overpass will significantly improve travel for the thousands of commuters and commercial drivers who rely on this route to get where they need to go safely and efficiently.

“Alberta’s government is proud to have invested $29.6 million toward this important project along the QEII, one of Alberta’s busiest roads and a critical trade corridor for the province. This project will not only support Airdrie’s growing population but also promote economic development in the region," Minister Dreeshan added.

Airdrie's Mayor, Peter Brown added that the project is essential, especially in the light of Airdrie's booming population.

“We have long recognized the necessity of the 40th Avenue interchange to accommodate Airdrie's rapid population growth... This interchange is essential for both current and future residents," Mayor Brown said. “I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to Airdrie residents, who have supported infrastructure development through their taxes, to developers who have contributed through levies and to Alberta Transportation and Economic Corridors for the land purchase,”

The project is estimated to have cost $65 million. Approximately 7,539 acres of land will become available for residential, industrial, commercial, and institutional projects over the next 30 years, propelling economic growth and prosperity for the community.

Prior to the 40th Avenue Interchange opening, there will continue to be major road and lane closures. Main Street and 40th Avenue will be closed down on Friday, October 6 at 7 p.m. and re-opened on Monday, October 9 at 6 a.m. Lane closures continue to be in effect until this Friday at 7 p.m.
