The Wynyard Golden Bears junior football team hosted the Foam Lake Panthers in their annual Tackle Hunger Game, which was played on October 10 under the lights on George Lamb Field.
Players and spectators were challenged to bring non-perishable food items to donate to the Wynyard and District Food Bank.
In total, 542 lbs of food and monetary donations were collected throughout the night. Sofina Foods was on hand to help the food bank volunteers with collecting and organizing donations, selling 50/50 tickets, and helping with the BBQ.
Junior football Head Coach Morris Sokul, the spearhead behind bringing Tackle Hunger to Wynyard, said, “Wynyard has sponsored Bears football for over 75 years. It is not a cheap sport to run. Tackle Hunger is a way for young athletes to appreciate and give something back to their community. To learn that many people battle daily just to get food. Community involvement is so so important in Rural Saskatchewan and this is a lesson our players need to learn…The need for helping others is well known and these volunteers demonstrate what volunteerism needs to be to our student body. Extremely happy this event has been a hit annually.”
By the end of the night, the Panthers defeated the Bears 28-14.
