Glenn Hall Park was the site of the 4A Boys soccer Region A championships this past weekend. The Humboldt Mohawks and the Lake Lenore Lancers were local representatives in the contest to see who advances to provincials in 11v11 play.
The seeding process had a Friday Matchup between Chief Poundmaker School and Chief John Keenatch School of Big River First Nation. Chief Poundmaker earned the right to move on with a 3-2 win. Lake Lenore, with co-op players from Muenster and Annaheim, narrowly edged the Humboldt Mohawks to advance, while Chief Poundmaker made their way into the final with a win over the Martensville Royals, 4-2.
The final was a tight match with plenty of striking chances on both sides. A clearing error in the first half cost Chief Poundmaker the first goal on the boot of Emmett Hogemann, while the second Lancers goal came on a brilliant cross from Chase Sylvestre, headed in by Ryder Knittig.
Lancers coach Curtis Strueby said the result came down to grit and determination.
“We were pressured quite a bit in this game, but we weathered the storm. For about 10 to 15 minutes in the second half, Poundmaker took it to us. Our kids are relentless on the ball, and that’s what made the difference.”
Strueby acknowledges the squad will have their work cut out for them next weekend. With the 2-nil win, the Lancers, along with host team, the Humboldt Mohawks, advance to provincials here in Humboldt, this coming weekend.
