The Swift Current Broncos five-game home winning streak has come to an end after a 5-1 loss to the Wenatchee Wild on Wednesday night at the InnovationPlex.
The Broncos got things off to a good start in this one with a few good chances on Wild goalie Daniel Hauser but couldn’t get one to go. The best chance came about halfway through the first as Josh Filmon was robbed by Hauser’s right pad on a cross-ice play. No more than a few seconds later, the Wild came back the other way and Connor Geekie scored for the Wild to make it 1-0.
Ty Fraser added a powerplay marker in the first to make it 2-0 after one period.
No goals were scored in the second, but the Broncos outshot the Wild 8-6 with nothing to show for it.
In the third, the Broncos continued to press, and it led to the Wild adding to their lead with Evan Friesen and Briley Wood to make it 4-0. Tyson Laventure broke the shutout for the Broncos late in the third, giving the Broncos a bit of juice, but they couldn’t get another one to go.
Friesen added an empty netter and that closed the book on the contest.
Swift Current only managed 22 shots towards Hauser, and Broncos Assistant Coach Taras McEwen said it just isn’t enough against a goalie like that.
“We had the good chances, we just weren’t around the net enough,” McEwen said. “With good goaltending, especially him, you have to get into his eyes and be a presence around the net, and I didn’t think we were doing a good enough job of that. And we were passing off too many shots, trying be a little bit cute.”
Reid Dyck stopped 27 of 31 in the game for the Broncos who are back in action on Friday against Saskatoon.
