Portage School Division looking to help inform parents on Social Media

Social media awareness is set to be a topic of discussion next week as two presentations on topic are coming for parents/caregivers of Portage la Prairie School Division students.

The RCMP Internet Child Exploitation (ICE) unit will go over a variety of topics with parents, including safety on various social media apps, risky online behaviour/issues related to social media, the consequences/emotional impact of using social media, criminal aspects of social media and online bullying and strategies/resources to support mental health or social media concerns.

Two shoplifting incidents in Portage lead to arrests

The RCMP has released information regarding two separate shoplifting incidents in the city last week.

On March 21st, just after 7:00 pm, Portage la Prairie RCMP were notified of a theft from a business in the 100 block of Saskatchewan Avenue West in Portage.

The report states that officers attended and arrested Troy Garnham, 29, of Portage.

Garnham was charged with Theft Under $5000.00 and appeared in court the next day.

RCMP arrest armed man at Selkirk hotel

Selkirk RCMP have arrested a 32-year-old man after receiving a report that he was leaning out of a window of the Lord Selkirk Hotel in Selkirk with a long gun.

According to the police report, officers attended immediately and contained the area, blocking streets, clearing the hotel, and putting adjacent businesses on lockdown Monday morning at approximately 10:10 a.m.

The RCMP put out a public notice to avoid the area.

Simplot shows appreciation for potato growers at award banquet 

Although being a distant memory at this point, the 2019,2020 and 2021 growing seasons were honoured on Thursday evening at the William Glesby Centre.

Everyone in attendance was applauded for their hard word, but only a select few could take home hardware.

Two Oakville vehicles stolen with keys left inside on same day

The RCMP is reminding citizens to always remove the keys to their vehicles following two incidents last week where automobiles were stolen due to owners leaving their keys inside them.

On March 16th, The Portage la Prairie RCMP received a report that a 2019 Ford F150 had been stolen from an address in the 100 block of 2nd Avenue in Oakville between 3:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m.

On this same day, Police say another vehicle was reported stolen from North School Road in Oakville. In this case, a white 2017 Ford Expedition was taken sometime overnight.

UPDATE: Long Plain First Nation under lockdown after shooting

Long Plain First Nation experienced a shooting incident on Sunday at about 6:20 p.m. which placed the community in lockdown. Manitoba First Nation Police Services were called to a home where a man was shot. 

"Upon arrival, officers were directed to the T-Intersection of Yellowquill Trail and located spent casings on the ground," says MFNPS. "Investigation revealed the victim, in the company of a passenger, was driving westbound on Yellowquill Trail when they drove past a dark-coloured truck travelling eastbound."

RCMP arrest two Portage youths on weapons charges

Portage la Prairie RCMP was called to the scene of underage children handling weapons last week in the city.

Police say on March 10th, at 12:52 p.m., two suspects were arrested in the area of Royal Road North.

A 12-year-old boy and a 14-year-old boy from Portage la Prairie were found to have edged weapons.

The 12-year-old faces a charge of Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose and was released to appear in court at a later date.

Breast Cancer Screening Clinic comes to Portage 

A mobile Breast Cancer Screening Clinic has popped up in Portage la Prairie in hopes of helping community members with early detection.

Executive Director for Central Plains Cancer Services, Sharilyn Knox, explains that this clinic is put on by Cancer Care Manitoba's breast check program.

"Every woman who is over the age of 50 should be getting a mammogram every three years. You should be getting a letter in the mail if you are due for one."

Snowmobile Derby returns to Rathwell

After a long pause due to COVID-19, the Rathwell community is set to host their 49th annual Snowmobile Derby Sunday.

Bailey Delf, the President of the Rathwell Snowmobile Derby, says he speaks for everyone in the community when he says they are looking forward to the day.

"We were fortunate enough to have our one in 2020, right before the pandemic. We've been three years waiting now, so everyone's super pumped up to get back out."

Between 100 and 200 riders are expected on Sunday, with proceeds going toward the Rathwell Fire Department.
