People Helping People Radiothon triumphantly wraps up

After two days of raising money for Central Plains Cancer Services, the People Helping People Radiothon has concluded.

Initially, the goal of the radiothon was to raise $50,000. However, our listeners came through as always, with the final tally hitting $77,196.

Central Plains Cancer Services Executive Director Sharilyn Knox says she feels overwhelmed.

"We didn't know what to expect when we started this yesterday, and we're just blown away by the support and enthusiasm that we're seeing from people in our region about this!"

Portage RCMP arrest 15-year-old after firearm incident

A firearms incident occurred at a residence in Oakville, on February 14, and was reported on the 18th,

Police were informed that a male youth made threats to other youths while holding a firearm.

A search warrant was executed on February 24 at the residence in Oakville.

Officers seized multiple firearms, ammunition and several knives.

Trojans game postponed

The Portage Collegiate Institute (PCI) Trojans and Pembina Tigers hockey game, scheduled for this evening, has been postponed due to Highway 16, from Road 69 north to Road 71 north, being closed in both directions.

This was supposed to be Game One of the Second Round 2022/23 Zone IV Playoffs.

The makeup date for Game One is to be determined.

The next game in the series was scheduled for this Friday: March 3rd, at 7:00 p.m. in Pilot Mound.

La Verendrye students learn about Indigenous culture

A Portage school gave their students an opportunity to be a part of the setting up and taking down of a tipi last week while also learning about the cultural aspect of it.

Alan Patterson, Vice Principal at La Verendrye School, says this came about for his school because the Portage la Prairie Community Revitalization Corporation (PCRC) asked if it would be okay to set up a tipi on school grounds during Winterfest, which was taking place that week.

"It worked out perfectly with I Love to Read Month," says Patterson.

Club Snow reacts to vehicles tearing up trails

Club Snow Inc. is responding to having their trails destroyed by vehicles not made for their trails.

In a post on Club Snow Inc.'s Facebook page earlier this week, they say a vehicle travelled over one of their groomed trails, causing deep ruts and other headaches for snowmobilers.

The trail which was mucked up is located just east of Days Inn.

Club Snow Inc.'s President Doug Atchison says this is highly disappointing.

Portage Honours Louis Riel and the Métis people

A Métis flag will proudly fly at Portage's City Hall for Louis Riel Day.

Portage la Prairie Mayor Sharilyn Knox and Manitoba Métis Federation Minister of Housing and Property Management Will Goodon made speeches before raising a Métis flag at City Hall Thursday afternoon.

Koko Platz rebuild effort gets huge injection at fundraising social

The MNP Exhibition Building was filled with community members looking to help build back the Koko Platz Rec Centre over the weekend.

Board Member for the effort, Tanner Waldvogel, says it was a very successful fundraising event.

"We had a pile of community support, a lot of people came out, and we were able to raise a lot of money to put towards our cause."

Waldvogel adds that one thing you can always count on in Portage is that people will be willing to give back, especially for a good cause.
