Watch out! What Alberta motorists need to know this spring and summer

Motorists have plenty of things to be mindful of this spring, especially as both farming and motorcycle seasons are now starting on Alberta roadways.

Rocky View County has reminded motorists about the farming season, stating that, motorists may have already seen a few tractors or machines in the fields as they drive around the county.

Mounties search for suspects in Crossfield pharmacy robbery

Mounties are investigating after three suspects robbed a Crossfield Pharmacy yesterday morning. RCMP is also warning residents that they should not approach the individuals as they are considered armed and dangerous. Residents should instead call 9-1-1 if they know the suspects' whereabouts. 

According to police, Airdrie RCMP responded to the pharmacy on Railway Avenue on April 15 just after 9 a.m.  

"Three suspects entered the pharmacy demanding pharmaceuticals. The suspects fled in a Silver Chrysler 300."

WATCH: Crossfield firefighters tackle two fires on Tuesday

Tuesday night was busy for the Crossfield Fire Department as two different fires broke out. Fire crews were able to get them under control with minimal damage.

Bill Messner, the Fire Chief for the Crossfield Fire Department talked about the first fire they attended.

"We had responded to the report of a grass fire, just in the northern area of the town along the railway."

When crews arrived, there was a fire that was impinging into a storage area of miscellaneous items.

Rutabaga Bowl brought laughs and smiles to Crossfield Food Fest

The 3rd Annual Rutabaga Bowl was the place to be in Crossfield on Saturday.

Multiple contestants tried their best to knock down pins with rutabagas and for most, it was a lot harder than it seemed.

Cheryl Shea, the Crossfield Farmers Market Manager explained the Rutabaga Bowl was a main attraction during the Crossfield Food Fest.

"Mayor Kim Harris opened up the games with the initial bowl, then 13 kids all tried their hand at bowling before we had the adults Rutabaga Bowl."

Crossfield needs another school, according to Rocky View Schools

Rocky View Schools (RVS) is looking to add a new Kindergarten to Grade 8 (K-8) school in Crossfield.

RVS is hoping the school will have a capacity for 600 students as it's in RVS’ 2024 - 2027 Capital Plan for 2025.

"It is number 10 on the list of RVS’ top priorities," stated RVS.

'Plenty of work to do' for Crossfield Fire Department after evaluation

The conclusions drawn from a 2022 fire service evaluation of the Crossfield Fire Department underlined that while the fire department has, 'amazing people... that do an incredibly dangerous job', there is plenty of work to do within the Crossfield Fire Service. 

The evaluation and subsequent executive report were carried out by Sea Hawk - a fire service equipment and consulting company. Crossfield Town Council heard from the lead evaluator, who is also the current Fire Chief of the Chestermere Fire Department, Jamie Coutts in late December 2022.

Is a new transit service coming to Crossfield and Carstairs?

The towns of Crossfield and Carstairs are wanting to gauge residents' interest in whether a transit bus with pickup sites in both towns going to Calgary would be appealing.

According to the survey, the service would need to be run by a non-profit organization, as Town Administration would not be able to run this service for residents. The initial plan is that the bus would operate from Monday to Friday (excluding holidays), as well as picking individuals up in Calgary in the afternoon and early in the evening, though exact times were not specified.
