Another podium weekend for Swift Current gymnasts

Swift Current’s Gelico Gymnastics Canadian Competitive Program (CCP) athletes travelled to Moose Jaw two weekends ago to compete in the Gymtastiks Stick It Competition. 

The gymnasts pulled out their best tricks for the competition weekend with several of the athletes securing a spot on the podium. 

Level Three gymnast, Paityn Reimer placed second with her floor routine, earning a score of 8.725. 

Reduce risk of Hantavirus

Now that warmer weather has finally settled into the province, many residents are beginning to tackle their spring cleaning. 

However, one important thing for individuals to keep in mind when clearing out sheds, garages, barns, and other spaces after winter is exposure to Hantavirus. 

Southwest man pleads guilty to manslaughter in B.C.

A man formerly of southwest Saskatchewan has entered a guilty plea five years after Vernon, B.C. resident Heather Barker was found unresponsive inside her home. 

Shaun Ross Wiebe pleaded guilty to manslaughter in Supreme Court in Vernon on May 1. 

Barker was admitted to the hospital in the early hours of March 15, 2018, before succumbing to her injuries.

Local residents will have to wait a little longer before they are able to utilize the ferries in the area for the 2023 season. 

The four ferries that operate in the area provide a critical link between shores of the South Saskatchewan River and typically begin operations in April. 

According to the Director of Communications with the Saskatchewan Ministry of Highways, David Horth, one factor for the delay was the chilly spring in the Southwest.

Local fundraiser couldn't get any sweeter

Live music, delicious desserts, coffee, and an inspiring speaker will all be at the forefront at the Swift Current Community Youth Initiatives Desserts 4 Hope Fundraiser later this month. 

The event will serve as a way to bring people together and support youth mental health within the community, explained Nathan Wiebe, executive director of the Swift Current Community Youth Initiative. 

Emergency crews battle highway blaze

The Swift Current Rural Fire Department and Swift Current Rural RCMP are currently on the scene of a large grassfire, located approximately one mile south of Wymark, on Highway 4. 

The fire is located on a property adjacent to Monette Farms NexGen Seed facility.

The City of Swift Current Fire Department is en route to the scene to assist with the blaze. 

The results are in: CAA's 2023 worst roads

Saskatchewan road users recently had the opportunity to nominate what they thought were the worst roads across the province thanks to CAA’s 2023 Worst Roads Campaign. 

The campaign, which wrapped up last Tuesday, allowed pedestrians, motorists, cyclists, transit riders, and motorcyclists, to point out unsafe roads throughout Saskatchewan.
